More Dash Than Cash examines the Bank of England Printing Works in Debden, Essex, exploring questions of value, visibility and contemporary British identity. Opened in 1956, the facility produces the banknotes in circulation across England, yet remains largely inaccessible and hidden within the surrounding suburban landscape.
The project explores this tension between proximity and exclusion. Photographs made from publicly accessible viewpoints reveal a site that is present but largely unseen—partially obscured by architecture, vegetation and security infrastructure. Alongside these landscapes, portraits of local residents, photographed in their own clothes and environments, connect the institution to the everyday lives of the community around it.
Together, the images consider how economic and social value are produced and experienced within place. Suburbia becomes a site where national infrastructure, post-war planning and everyday life intersect, drawing attention to the often-unseen systems that underpin contemporary Britain.
